COURSE SYLLABUS:
Introduction to basic concepts (1 week)
Elastic response of single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems (3 weeks)
- Equation of motion
- Solution of the SDOF equation of motion
- Undamped and damped free vibration response
- Forced vibration response: harmonic and earthquake excitations
Elastic earthquake response spectra (1 week)
- Response spectrum concept (acceleration, velocity and displacement response spectra)
- Pseudo-velocity and pseudo-acceleration response spectra
Elastic response of multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) systems (6 weeks)
- Equations of motion
- Undamped free vibration: eigenvalue analysis
- Vibration modes and frequencies
- Orthogonality of model vectors
- Modal expansion of displacements
- Solution of equation of motion under earthquake excitation
- Modal superposition procedure
- Response spectrum analysis
- Modal combination rules
- Equivalent static (effective) modal forces
Basic code approach for MDOF response (2 weeks)
