COURSE OBJECTIVES : Understanding of basic structural dynamics under earthquake induced ground motions

COURSE SYLLABUS:

Introduction to basic concepts (1 week)

Elastic response of single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems (3 weeks) 

  • Equation of motion
  • Solution of the SDOF equation of motion
    • Undamped and damped free vibration response 
    • Forced vibration response: harmonic and earthquake excitations

Elastic earthquake response spectra (1 week)

  • Response spectrum concept (acceleration, velocity and displacement response spectra)
  • Pseudo-velocity and pseudo-acceleration response spectra

Elastic response of multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) systems (6 weeks)

  • Equations of motion
  • Undamped free vibration: eigenvalue analysis
  • Vibration modes and frequencies
  • Orthogonality of model vectors
  • Modal expansion of displacements
  • Solution of equation of motion under earthquake excitation
  • Modal superposition procedure
  • Response spectrum analysis
  • Modal combination rules
  • Equivalent static (effective) modal forces

Basic code approach for MDOF response (2 weeks)

PREREQUISITES : -

DURATION & HOURS PER WEEK : 13 weeks - 3 hrs/week

GRADING BASIS : Assignments during the term (60%) + final exam (40%)
