ABSTRACT

In this study, the response of Aya Sofya to seismic excitation is investigated. A numerical model for dynamic analysis is created and calibrated to give similar mode shapes and modal frequencies as obtained from ambient vibration surveys. The acceleration records from the nine tri-axial accelerometers at structurally critical nine points in Aya Sofya, obtained from the earthquake on March 22, 1992 in Karacabey near Bursa, are utilized to evaluate the actual dynamic behavior of Aya Sofya in an earthquake. The corrected accelerations recorded at the ground level are applied as input to the numerical model. The response of the model to a simulaled magnitude 5 earthquake is also investigated. The actual and analytical results are compared to identify the structural system and to create a realistic numerical model for future earthquake vulnerability studies of Aya Sofya.
